perhaps easiest to do is to do a check on AirHelp or some other agency. You don't have to carry through, but they will tell you right away if they have in their DB that the plane was probably delayed by a legitimately unavoidable issue.
Thanks for the suggestion. I submitted the basic info on a few sites (including AirHelp) and they all said that it appears we are eligible for compensation. Between this flight and the delay we had from Athens to Santorini due to mechanical issues after take-off (resulting in a delayed arrival of over 2 hours), we should be eligible for a total of 850 euros each from 2 different airlines on this trip (the ATH- JTR issue was an Aegean flight).
