For my sakura trip 2 mths ago i just set up mobile suica on my wife and my iPhones (technically apple watches). Functionality-wise didn't seem any different from a physical suica, could even use it to buy online shinkansen tickets via smartex app and tap in/out of the shinkansen gates.
