Having been visiting Bali for extended periods over the past 10 years here is my advice regarding exchagning/withdrawing cash:

1. Do NOT exchange money at the airport unless you absolutely have to (eg to pay for a taxi) as the exchange rates are terrible. An ATM withdrawal is preferable, but if you have to exchange cash then exchange the minimum amount you need.

2. ATM withdrawals vs exchanging foreign currency: I always used to take cash and change it in Bali as I felt that I got a better exchange rate, but last year I discovered I got a better rate with an ATM withdrawal. However if your bank charges a cash withdrawal fee then that could swing the argument in the other direction. As of writing Indonesian banks do not charge for a cash withdrawal so you don't need to worry about that.

3. ATM withdrawals - try to use an ATM machine in a bank or inside a mini mart to avoid the machine having been tampered with. From memory there is an ATM machine in the IC. I wouldn't get too hung up whether the machine dispenses 50K or 100K notes. I always prefer the 100K machines as the withdrawal limit is higher and you end up with less notes in your wallet. If you need more cash than the maximum withdrawal amount then simply do further withdrawals after the first one. If you get 100K notes and you want smaller notes then ask at the front desk for this.

4. Exchanging money - you need to use an authorised money exchange outlet to do this. These are normally in shop-like outlets on the main street and have company names and look reputable. Unfortunately I can't recommend anywhere in Jimbaran as I haven't exchaged there. What you want to avoid are the hole-in-wall operations that lure you in with tempting exchange rates, but are likely to scam you. When you exchange money always count your money before you leave the premises. Unfold the bills and count them carefully. There is a common scam where a bill is counted twice if you count while the bills are folded, so you are short changed.

5. Overall I wouldn't get too hung up about trying to chase the best exchange rate, as unless you are changing a large amount the difference is likely to be negligible.

6. Last but not least - don't sweat over the money and enjoy your holiday in beautiful Bali!

Hope this helps!
