You can't upgrade the ticket on AA stock using Avios and you need to board the first leg of that ticket to avoid your entire booking being cancelled. So you can't board using a seperate ticket. So no "workaround" here other than asking about an airport upgrade offer.

But honestly I wouldn't worry for a 2hr flight either. Maybe check out the food and drink pre ordering
