Penalty for not flying ticket in sequence rather than entire ticket cancellation

Is it true that AF does not automatically cancel an entire trip when the first segment is not flown?

In the ticket conditions printed on the PDF-eticket they mention a fee of 125€ for European economy flights, 300€ for European business class flights, 500€ for intercontinental economy and premium economy as well as 1500€ for intercontinental business and La Premiere.

It's not cheap, but it does not destroy your entire ticket when you need to drop a segment. Didn't know that.

The fare is applicable for a ticket used fully, in sequential order for the specified
journey and on the specified dates. As outlined in the General Conditions of
Carriage, any non-compliant use noticed on the day of travel may incur an
additional flat-rate fee at the airport for the amount of: €125 in the Economy
cabin and €300 in the Business cabin, for flights within Europe (including
metropolitan France and Corsica), €500 in the Economy and Premium
Economy cabins, €1,500 in the Business and La Première cabins (or the
equivalent in local currency), for intercontinental flights
