To be honest, for a one-off journey it's probably not much worth the extra 7/8 quid vs. the Piccadilly Line direct. As you're starting at Heathrow you'll get a seat either way which is the most important thing. Either is a valid choice. If you're familiar with NYC, it's similar to deciding between the subway vs the LIRR on that kind of routing from JFK, but the Tube is more comfortable (and far less crazy) than the subway.

By contrast, if your destination were Farringdon I'd say definitely take the EL (that's my station and is what I do now).
