Especially since you appear to fly on Virgin Atlantic / Skyteam so infrequently that you aren't picking up TPs organically?
I can understand wanting to stretch to Gold and being a few hundred TPs short, but Silver starting from close to 0?

What does silver status get you these days?
I will confess, I stopped chasing VS status many years ago. I had gold for several years (achieved by the old SQ F SIN-KUL TP runs), and I thought it was great - Clubhouse access, multiple op-ups and some great Gold events. Even silver was worth having - in the days that the queues for the Y check ins stretched out of the doors, I felt valued and even got a few op-ups as silver.
They then changed the goal posts and increased the number of TPs for renewal. At the same time, the beancounters seemed to take over and the perks diminished considerably, so I changed my (limited) budget to chasing hotel status. I am now lifetime Titanium with Marriott, and don't regret the decision in the slightest. I accept that hotel status doesn't give the perks that it used to - especially in the US, but I certainly think it was worth it.
As always, YMMV and I wish you the best in your quest for renewal.

Both good replies. Thanks. I have been chasing BA silver to Gold this year hence ignoring Virgin.
The main benefits for me (and please correct me if I’m wrong) is the ability to use the credit card voucher in Upper (you can’t use it with Red in Upper right?) and I towards the end of the year I do a fair chunk of Delta flying in the US so it’s useful to have the baggage allowance and priority check in etc.
