EMERGENCY!!!!

I just saw a flight for the same amount of miles with JFK both as the arrival and departing airport! If I cancel my flight right now, will the miles immediately come back so I can book the new ticket? When I go to change flight it says I will need to cancel the flight. I just want to make sure when I cancel I will still see the flight I see right now.
