I had a recent case where I got credit for a stay at a hotel I had stayed at years ago and got an email for a pending reservation I did not make. Turns out a person with my name called to make a reservation directly at the hotel and the hotel agent saw my previous stay and used that information for the other person. It all got straightened out.
