If you called BA and upgraded it is unlikely to be any kind of offer price, most likely just a fare difference and I'm guessing it was during the sale.
CW flights are often quite expensive nowadays and F relatively little more.
You certainly would never get an AUP (or probably a POUG) at that price and UUA is around 25k avios so similar value to £250 so I think you made a very smart move.
A big advantage of BAH is they seem to be very flexible about enforcing change fees which is something you generally won't get with a flight-only booking.
