There's an offshoot of the IWM in South London, which is good for a short visit - might be an alternative.

The one in South London is very, very nice, I've been to it a number of times but maybe not since 2014 when we went to see their WWI exhibits that were the result of extensive remodeling for the 100th anniversary of the beginning on WWI. The Cabinet War Rooms, north oof the river and near Downing Street is also very nice. It's basically the bomb shelter where Churchill spent much of the war. Neither has much in the way of aircraft compared to Duxford although the one in South London had some aircraft as I recall. Perhaps the most amazing exhibit in the IWM in South London, although I don't know if it is still there, was a recording device that the US was using to try to locate the positions of German artillery and they play the section made a little before and after the moment that the armistice went into effect on November 11 1918. It's pretty astonishing to actually be able to hear the end of a world war. And it is very dramatic.
