Granted, the last couple times I've tried this, it's been on DL-marketed partner flights on VS. But the VS app as well had the same issue. Successful scan (eventually), but no DOCS OK indicator.
United app is flawless with this and the BP shows DOCS OK upon scanning.
For INTL flights, I usually prefer paper boarding passes since you already need to have your passport out and a paper BP can easily be held inside a passport so I prefer to stop at the kiosk.
