For me it'll usually scan successfully -- sometimes it takes a few tries because it gets the letters wrong in the name sometimes and uses a number for the letter "O" (and they don't even invite you to scan it, you have to know to click the camera button) -- but it never shows DOCS OK on the boarding pass for me and just says "Verify passport" i.e. negating the point of mobile check in.
Granted, the last couple times I've tried this, it's been on DL-marketed partner flights on VS. But the VS app as well had the same issue. Successful scan (eventually), but no DOCS OK indicator.
United app is flawless with this and the BP shows DOCS OK upon scanning.
