I can just see this causing problems for guests who wish to connect non-Android/iOS laptops. Front desk staff will assume it's all automatic and they won't be prepared to help in such cases.
Nothing changed for the regular login, you still use the last name room number or access code. It just auto connects on my phone now which is nice since I have limited data when roaming overseas. It's been working in Japan so far at ANA Crowne Plazas and ICs.
