Yes, EC261 requires - in the USA to Europe direction, a UK or other European airline. The USA is reportedly considering a compensation scheme but that's years off. You would apply to the AA Customer Service department, they may give you are US$50 credit for something like this, though i believe it's partly related to the total spend you made with AA.
