Well, in addition to what should be pretty obvious decrepit condition versus brand-spanking new condition, the telltale sign is the swipe slots on the old ones are vertical, with the card at a 90 degree angle from the reader, and the new ones with the swipe slots orienting the card at a (45 degree?) angle to the reader.
