SYD-DPS in economy wouldn't help very much at ~2900 miles. But in general yes - the whole thing prices on the longest leg. We've made out well from the multi-partner chart a couple of times, but we're still young enough to deal with a 12+ hour economy leg [and not Avios rich enough to afford it otherwise]. Not an insignificant amount of planning required though.
