So a friend of mine (no status) recently had a similar situation: long layover on KL at AMS and his incoming flight arrived earlier so he could hop on the earlier hop (it was to UK). I advised him to go to the gate of the earlier flight and ask nicely (didn’t have much hope to be honest) but surprisingly the gate agent issued him a BP for the earlier flight (not sure if later flight was overbooked or anything — didn’t seem so).

so perhaps keep the connection and if you arrive early try getting to the gate of the previous flight?
