Is it logical to combine a partner to the gateway or is it better to use an award from the gateway?

ie. LAX-HKG-HAN or LAS-LAX-HKG-HAN
You cannot have LAS-LAX-HKG-HAN on a one-way award (nor LAS-LAX-HKG-HAN-HKG-LAX-LAS on a round-trip award). One-way award is limited to 2 sectors only. Round-trip award is limited to 4 sectors only (max 2 sectors each way). If you satisfy the requirement of a oneworld multi-carrier award (need 2 non-CX oneworld carriers, max 5 stopovers, 2 open-jaws, and 2 transits), you should include all sectors as long as the total mileage is still within the same award zone. In your case, for LAX-HKG-HAN-HKG-LAX, adding LAS-LAX-LAS will not take you to the next award zone. If you can take AA one way and AS the other way for LAS-LAX-LAS, you can potentially redeem a oneworld multi-carrier award instead. In fact, in this case a oneworld multi-carrier award for Business cost less than a standard round-trip award. Note you can only have 2 transits, so you will need to make some stopovers in HKG and/or LAX. Take a look at https://flights.cathaypacific.com/en...ard-chart.html and https://www.cathaypacific.com/cx/en_...onditions.html
