I can think of a couple of reasons:

if you are Star Gold, it seems that LH will often block the seat next to you. They can't do that if they don't know that you are Star Gold
It's easy to forget to add that information when you check in. Then you need to go back and apply for credit retroactively

My question is this appears to be a "known issue" for at least four years. LH seems to have every other Star Alliance program automated. Is it really so difficult to add Aeroplan to the drop-down menu in the booking engine?
