I know HKG and hotels abroad tend to ask for passport, etc at check-in. Just afraid they wont let him check in if I am not there.
It's a must to present your passport. He will be able to check in alone if his name is in the reservation, but YMMV for the benefits, I wonder if they will give u SNP as well unless they saw you and/or your passport.
