Good chance that they were downgraded from J for some reason. Also good chance that they were friends to crew members if they are not AC employees themselves.
When passengers are involuntarily downgraded from J, J service is still offered as a goodwill sometime. Friends of crew members or employees sitting in Y are not supposed to receive any preferential treatment, but, I have seen that often.
