To answer this part of the OP's original question: I bought Visit Europe Pass tickets in conjunction with an award flight to Europe earlier in 2004. No problem at all. (It was the award for flying two RTs from Boston/NY to California/Florida, so including onward travel past AA's European gateway, in our case LHR, wasn't an option.)
As noted in other posts, just because you can doesn't necessarily mean you should.
