The BA desk at INV couldn’t give me an answer, and BA phone support refused to give me an answer, after 2 hours on hold to get through. Stellar customer service.
To say this has been a frustrating experience would be an understatement. Most accommodations in INV are booked because of the bank holiday, and BA showed no willingness whatsoever in helping to get me accommodation until the replacement flight tomorrow morning.
So yeah, just trying to gather any info I need to make a claim while it’s still within ~24h of the original flight. Any help would be genuinely appreciated.
Welcome to FT, and sorry it is this issue brings you here.
In terms of your immediate needs, just book yourself a hotel and put a claim for the costs later on at the same time you submit your request for compensation. Your meals are also covered so claim for those as well.
You can't get a documented reason prior to applying, but as noted it is going to be due to BA's issues earlier in the week, and therefore compensation is going to be due. You don't have to do anything else in your claim other than say you were booked on the flight today, it was cancelled, and you are rebooked on a flight tomorrow.
There is no rush to submit the claim for compensation and expenses, and absolutely no reason for you to do it within 24 hours. You can actually claim up to 6 years after, so yes do it next week would be fine.
