Thanks for reporting back - hopefully you enjoyed HKG airport, getting back towards its prime.... For others thinking the same, I would have personally suggested a trip into town, have a nice brunch/lunch/dinner and then head back to the airport. Now that the airport express is back to running approximately every 10-15 minutes it would make the stopover more entertaining with no real stress about making the flight. Aware that without a HK ID card it may take you a while to clear immigration, but still plenty with 9 hours
My thinking, being cautious on timing, would be:
  • 30-60 minutes to get from the gate to clear immigration (without a HKID, with one it would be 15 minutes to walk from the gate and then nearly 0 waiting time for immigration)
  • 60-90 minutes to get the train return, plus a bit of waiting around (24 minutes x 2 and a worse case 15 minute wait each side, though the reality is you aren't as likely to need that long)
  • 15-30 minutes to clear security / immigration on return and get to the gate
At a worse case this takes 180 minutes (3 hours), so in the case of your 9 hour lay-over, you could easily have 4 hours in central and 2 hours in the lounge without any unnecessary stress.
