Have you tried to book it multi city? It may still be more expensive than booking straight through but less than booking the flights separately. The max connection is supposed to be 4 hours, anything over that and it generally won't let you book it as a one way.
For longer haul international fares like Asia/Europe, connections can be up to 24 hours and still price on a single fare component. delta.com mulit-city search won't work for these as it forces all segments on separate fare components. ITA Matrix is good at searching for possible overnight options on a single fare component if you limit searches to DL flights with 'DL+' in advanced search function.
