Same day change is only available if you buy a Plus fare (or above), your booking is short haul, and it solely involves a direct flight from A to B. Status held doesn't make any difference to this.
Otherwise your options are to buy a flexible fare (which will naturally cost much more) or to make separate US-LHR and LHR-MAD bookings (which of course carries the risk of a missed connection).
