Not if you buy the AA fare. For standalone itineraries BA sells what they call Plus fares, which allow free change on the day (interchangeable with BA and IB ops). But for connecting itineraries these don’t apply, and as you say it’s not common in Europe for airlines to offer US-style standby flexibility.
