Yeah. Unless you fly mostly first class on AF, lounge provision is a weak point of ST. This is especially true if you are flying East (from Europe), given the absence of Asian airlines with quality lounges in ST. A particular strength of OW for individuals who are OW Emerald (i.e. equivalent to FB Plat) is access to (most) first class lounges in the alliance.

TBH, I am not sure that Malev and Air Berlin made a huge difference (unless you were based in Germany). Malev was only useful if flying to Eastern Europe and Air Berlin's network was patchy at best, and with a level of service which was not exactly stellar.
