The change provisions allow for a change to be made - not to store the value as credit. Indeed, changing to another date is doable, but a new flight needs to be booked, not held as credit
That contradicts what American Airlines outlined in their FAQ, linked in their Customer Service Plan, as submitted to the U.S. Department of Transportation.
