I believe (happy to be corrected) the reason for the different age groups are that children under 12 get a discounted fare, 12-15 pay the full fare but are exempt from APD (only in economy though, in premium cabins children of any age are charged APD if they occupy a seat), and adults obviously pay the full fare + APD, so booking a 12yo as a child shouldn’t make a difference for a reward flight as you aren’t paying the fare anyway, though not sure how rigid BA will be when it comes to it.
