Renaissance Esmeralda Resort & Spa, Indian Wells, CA [Master Thread]

I was surprised that a hotel of this size and apparent popularity lacked its own thread, so I decided to start one. I spent four nights here last month (April 13-17, 2023) while attending the Coachella Valley Music Festival. I was surprised to find availability for a "1 Bedroom Studio Suite" at a relatively reasonable rate of 63,000 points plus $75 (for the upgrade from the base room) per night. (Keep in mind no base rooms were available and, even 6 months out, many hotels were sold out or close to it.)

I then inquired about upgrading to an executive suite, and I was able to switch to one with a copay of $500 rather than $75 for the upgrade. (This was not a particularly good deal, as the executive suite usually sells for a price fairly similar to the studio suite, but the closed-door separate living room would enable me to invite others who would cover the upgrade costs.) So I invited others to join me. Closer to the stay, I inquired about a larger suite. None were available until a few days prior when they offered the presidential suite, which we negotiated to a total upgrade fee of $1000 per night (on top of the 63,000 points per night). The suite typically sells for about $2400/night on Coachella weekends, so this was a great deal for me (particularly since my other guests were covering most of the cash portion of the stay).

Upon arrival, the valets were very friendly and quick to help with everything, check-in was a breeze, and we were ushered to the beautiful suite where the bellman was quick to help me rearrange any furniture as necessary to suit our preferences. The pullout sofa was in the master bedroom by default, so we decided to move that into the living room, and we then arranged for housekeeping to bring two rollaways, which was no trouble at all. Pics of the suite after moving the green pullout from the master and doing a little bit of rearranging but before the rollaways came:

Overall, I came in expecting little given that it was a sold-out weekend. But I was impressed: the valet and bell staff were truly above-and-beyond (and we treated them accordingly), and the pool and F&B staff were pretty great too. The sushi at the lobby sushi bar was expensive and not typically my taste (the focus is heavily sauced rolls, whereas I am more of a traditionalist), but I enjoyed the roll that I ordered and I especially enjoyed the sashimi.

For the welcome amenity as Ambassador, I chose the continental breakfast for two. I believe the upcharge to the full buffet was $10 a person, which we did once, but frankly the continental was sufficient because of the decent quality smoked salmon -- I was able to have a good salmon bagel with the fixins, a bowl of berries, a cappuccino, and lots of fresh juice from the do-it-yourself juicer (melon, cucumber, citrus, carrots, etc.). The hot stuff was fine but not memorable. On another occasion I just paid the $5 for a side of two poached eggs to add to my bagel and that was all I needed. Others who didn't get free breakfast got stuff from the coffeeshop on the upper lobby level, they have breakfast sandwiches and whatnot.

One minor hiccup was that evidently a welcome gift was left in the wrong room before my arrival and then re-delivered but I never got it. It was supposedly a note and a small bag of toffee. I didn't need it, so I didn't press the issue or ask for it to be re-sent.

4pm checkout was granted with no trouble at all.

The grounds themselves are also quite nice, with cornhole, ping-pong, firepits at night, and a pair of hot tubs.

Overall, this hotel was the perfect fit for our stay. I can highly recommend it as a base for anyone going to Coachella. It was an easy 15 minute drive to lot 2A (we just did regular non-preferred parking and were easily in and out of the lot all 3 days). Shuttle system seems fine too, but having the car was super convenient and facilitated late-night In-N-Out stops on the way back.

The hotel itself does not look the most appealing from the outside (big boxy blight), but the room was fresh and well-decorated, the bed was good, the staff were great, and the location was ideal. Happy to answer any questions.
