I noticed in my travels that where the station was operated by Great Western Railway, the optical scanner would not read my pass, so I had to get assistance from one of the GWR gate people. For whatever reason, GWR does not accept Oyster cards. My pass would open the gates at stations operated by Southern or Southwestern Railway. I think it also worked in Liverpool Street when I entered the Greater Anglia platforms.
The only station where it
did work for me is Liverpool Lime Street -- it didn't work at Heathrow T2/3, at Paddington, at Leeds, or at Newcastle. (There were a few other stations where I didn't even try it because there was a station staff member directly in my line of vision as I approached the barriers, so it was easier just to show them my phone -- and Liverpool Moorfields and Liverpool Central don't have QR code readers.)
