I normally go for the great classical hotels like the Grande Bretagne. However, the GB is just too big and corporate. It feels like a tarted-up Hilton.
Athens is crammed with truly unique & interesting boutique hotels. I personally like the Perianth, though its decor may be too industrial for some.
We have migrated from the GB only because I like to have better control of what room and location of that room in the hotel we will get. We have been staying at the AVA or the AthensWas ,which is a little too industrial decor for us, but the terrace has a magnificent view of the Parthenon. The AVA, at the foot of the Acropolis.... has two top floor suites, reasonably priced, with sweeping terraces.
