The probable reason why you had a 9h connection is that it was cheaper.
CX usually does not allow you to take an earlier flight unless you pay the fare difference and fee..
On routes where there were endemic delays (like PVG) CX was flexible, but rarely on other routes.
In some cases, and with status, you might be successful in arguing, but you would need some good reasons.

OLCI makes little difference.
