Agree with your last comment.... But glass half full approach might also acknowledge that they have got some error/load detection and can at least give you a sorry message rather than spinning you a doughnut for 30secs and then dumping you with a 500 error code.

A random guess might be that they were meddling with something and there was a temporary outage.
