I am new to diamond status. Have long been a hyatt globalist and always got upgraded to best available room without a charge. Hhonors website suggests Hilton has a similar policy. Stayed at new Hilton in downtown Columbus, Oh and was told would only be upgraded one room category despite being better rooms available. Was told if wanted corner room on high floor would cost $15. Is this standard with Hilton. If so it is a big difference compared with how Hyatt treats top elites.
Yes, this is standard with Hilton.
It varies widely from hotel to hotel and brand to brand, as well as geographically, however you should never expect an upgrade to the best available room in the entire hotel. The T&C's leave it wide open as to what constitutes a Diamond upgrade:
Diamond Hilton Honors Members may receive upgrades to preferred rooms up to “junior”, “standard” or “one-bedroom” suites. Preferred rooms may also include those not on the Executive Floor but conferring Executive Lounge access, the next-best available room types, rooms with desirable views or amenities or other rooms identified as “preferred” by the hotel and may vary within each brand
