I have never used the Bag Drop service and was wondering how it works when outside the U.K.

We are in Boston later this year and the airport desk check-in opens 3 hours before departure. If we check in online will we be able to Bag Drop say 4 hours before, clear security and immigration, and head for the lounge? I was under the impression (hopefully incorrect) that BA staff are required to complete a passport check?
