I ran an experiment in the past ~10 days & the UA web booking tool would not let me proceed past the point of choosing an award for which I had too few miles. It’s conceivable I overlooked something, but AFAICT there is no way to get to the pay/apply FareLock screen absent enough miles already on hand. I was definitely looking for it because my past experience lines up with yours from last October.
If there is still a way to put an award on hold pending a miles deposit, I’d be happy to hear of it.
DP: I tried to hold the award ticket using the Farelock option on the website but was unsuccessful. I then contacted UA and the agent was able to help me to hold the award tickets for 24 hours. I am unsure if this will be applicable for everyone but I think it is worth a shot. Now I am simply hoping that the points will be transferred on time.
