Had a similar experience while trying to book something transportation-related in Japan that requires phone booking. They refused to book using my preferred vendor because contracually they are only allowed to use their own two vendors. Reallllly?

This service has been extremely diluted in the last two years. Barely any value to be had aside from booking "amex held" tables. They won't set alerts to book hard reservations at restaurants that release tables in waves anymore, they won't book event tickets on date of release anymore, and if a vendor isn't one of their pre-screened partners, they won't book something for you, even with permission to use your amex card as payment. Ridiculous.
