Maybe, there is also such an office in JFK that you could head to when flying back or flying somewhere else?
In a similar vein, I was on a connection WAW-ZRH-JFK in Business Class. My Loro Piana jacket ended up in the bin above me and shoved to the back by another passenger's bag. As I am short I cannot see into the bin. I was concerned about the connection, was rushing, and did not realize I had not grabbed the jacket until I had passed passport control - some 15 minutes later.

Arrived in the lounge in Terminal E - immediately reported the jacket - their statement was that they could not check or contact anyone, and I should contact Lost and Found. Of course by the time anyone responded it was the next day, who knows where the plane was/had been.

To summarize - no one had seen or found my jacket.
