As soon as you want to add another *A carrier segment, the entire award must be available as a *A award. In other words, the agent had to be able to see the initial SQ segment within the *A search and this is where there is often a problem if the SQ segment has not been made available as a *A award.
I chanced upon the thread as I am helping a friend with an award ticket. Here’s a data point. Without knowing these rules regarding combining *A + KF availability, I actually did manage to combine *A Partner Award flights with an SQ segment (BOM-SIN) in Business Class that was available via KF but not on UA or AC apps. It was priced as a Star Alliance award. I fed the agent availability sector by sector and they were able to price and issue it. Not sure if I just got lucky or not?
