Wi-Fi doesn’t connect to “older macs” at Staybridge. IHG-wide issue?
I just completed a 2-night stay at Staybridge Suites in MI & could not connect to Wi-Fi on my 2017 MacBook Air. Neither the name+room # login nor their password method worked. Super annoying when you’re on a biz trip & have to upload files from laptop. Tethering to phone & iPad for phone plan access not an option here. Yet the Wi-Fi connection worked on my iPhone 12 & 2020 iPad. Front desk personnel Fri & Sat not helpful. No offer of a number to call for tech support, whatnot. At check out a diff clerk asked if I had an older mac. Why, yes, I do. He replied: ‘that’s the problem. Our wi-fi system doesn’t work with “older macs”’ (not specifying any particular OS). He said the name of the wi-fi system but I can’t remember it. When I asked if it was this particular hotel property or all Staybridge suites, he replied that it’s likely IHG wide since he used to work at a holiday inn (six months ago) and it was the same issue — same exact wi-fi set up the hotels are forced to use by the brand(s). Curious since this is supposedly a chain that seeks bookings for long term work stays (with the mini-kitchen etc). So why have a system that hinders online access that working people require? I’m self employed & can’t swing a network card plan or whatever it’s called. I never have trouble connecting to Wi-Fi in Libraries, Starbucks, airports, every other hotel I’ve stayed at in the last 10+ years etc etc though (not unsecured networks aren’t ideal). I checked out early to find a more work-friendly locale.
Anybody know if Is this wi-fi prob w/ “older macs” is a Staybridge thing or is it IHG-wide? I just want to be clued-in so I can avoid booking at IHG properties in the future if this is going to be an issue.
