There are different ways of computing redemption value. If you get upgraded (because of your status, or just luck) to a more luxurious type of accommodation than just the basic run-of-house room, it's easy to inflate the redemption value of your points to something enormous, as some of the above examples show; especially if you base it on the Rack rate for a suite or club floor room.
However, I think it is misleading to compute redemption value this way. The TRUE comparison, in my book, is against what you might actually otherwise willingly pay for the room. I wouldn't normally pay for a suite, but I'll happily accept one as a free upgrade. (And besides that, the upgrade is on a space-available basis; and I often get Plat upgrades on paid stays anyhow.) So I don't compute my redemption values on that basis. I use a more conservative, and more realistic, approach. @:-)
