It actually hasn't been that long (3 years) since UA stopped the PetSafe program that put pets in the cargo hold, and there are still exceptions: https://www.united.com/ual/en/us/fly...xceptions.html

Was one of the OP's flights between GUM and HNL?

Were both of the OP's flights on mainline UA metal?
