For years my BPs have run the middle initial into my first name, for example PeterW instead of Peter W (not my real name, by the way). It has never been an issue until now.
Today, when I try to do OLCI, because my first name on the record comes up as Peterw instead of Peter I get a notice that I cannot be checked in and cannot have TSA precheck because my name and KTN do not match (well, of course they don't, thanks to United's flaky IT). I spent fifteen minutes on the phone with a charming 1K representative who walked through the process with me as I re-entered all the information I had already entered, with the same result as before. Eventually she overrode it and checked me in as a one-time exception.
I decided to remove the middle initial from my profile. On trying to do this, I discover that this is considered to be a change of name, and cannot be effected without uploading a government-issued document showing my name, or uploading an affidavit. All my government-issued documents have my full middle name, so that is not going to work, and I'm not inclined to pay a notary's fee for an affidavit.
This may have been covered further up the thread, but I didn't read all 235 posts to check. Any advice on what to do will be received with much gratitude!
