I'm new to this, so I apologize if I've missed a discussion - I too am close to requalifying as Gold (24,344), and called AA to see what my options are. The rep told me that in some close cases AA will award miles so a member who is short can keep his or her status.

Is this a proven fact? And how close does one have to be? She couldn't say what the cut off would be, so I'm checking short hops flights, but I'd rather not shell out if I don't have to.

Has this happened to anyone?
