Maybe, I wouldn't be surprised. But I think the 3 day limit is somewhat new since I've definitely searched for flights within that a few years ago. Still, availability is very good until 3 days out.
Using *A miles on ANA, awards are available up to the day before, possibly even the day of departure.
Can't speak for ANA, but late last year, I definitely redeemed United miles for a same-day domestic Japan route.
