I think keeping expectations low is key. That said, I like to distinguish between hotels where all rooms are basically the same and then are some suites, and hotels where in rooms between base and suite you get a few extra square metres or better furniture. At the latter, I do politely push back against a mere high floor, because I think the spirit, if not the letter, of the upgrade benefit is that you'll get a materially better room if reasonably possible. As always, one catches more flies with honey and by being ungraceful about a denied upgrade one is only showing oneself up.
