My oh my, those Gatwick 777s

Now I have done my fair share of economy long haul travel, and can cope with most things with a good pair of headphones, but what I saw on an outbound LAS flight last week really shocked me - it was clear how far BA's 'race to the bottom' for economy travel has gone. Whoever designed this layout needs to be publicly flogged.

The two large, 10-across cabins are so packed in, with tiny aisles, that no-one has any personal space at all. And when you get a stag-heavy flight with people congregating in big groups drinking to excess, the noise levels are insane. There is simply no way I could cope with 11 hours in that environment. There were several medical episodes on our flight, due I suspect to a combo of stress and booze - and it would not surprise me if medical diversions on this route were higher than average.

We were at the front of Premium (thank God), but there are no separate toilets for WTP on these planes, meaning a trek to the back. In fact, there are only three toilets to serve the entire right hand side of the plane, excluding Club. This is woefully inadequate, and you would often find yourself queuing for 15 minutes in a tiny space, literally on top of people in their seats.

I feel so sorry for the crew on those routes - how they keep smiling for so long I would never know.

An AUP to CW for the return leg at £559 was the biggest no-brainer I have ever come across.
